Job Description
The Opportunity
As an Initiative Manager within the Business Intelligence, Reporting & Analytics team you will serve as a team lead and coach while also driving prioritization, alignment, and execution across the business intelligence, reporting and analytics program. The ideal candidate will blend strong initiative management expertise with a deep understanding of the business, ruthless prioritization, data interconnectivity, and be able to align objectives for operational efficiency. Via a robust understanding of BIRA deliverables and our data strategy, the incumbent can easily ‘connect the dots’ to enable cross functional synergy to optimize team focus, resourcing and deliverables.
The Team
The Business Intelligence, Reporting & Analytics (BIRA) team enables Operations and key business partners across MassMutual by providing actionable insight to inform both strategic initiatives and operational decisions. Through industry leading tools, we empower all levels of the organization via analytics, reporting, data management, visualization and business technology, to name a few areas. In short, we consult with leaders on business intelligence needs and represent it in ‘business speak’ with powerful visualizations to enable advisor centricity, business performance and align associate activity metrics. On any given day, this could mean sourcing and structuring internal data, integrating third party data, deriving analytical insight, creating leading/lagging indicators or guiding data literacy to engage users in data driven decisioning across their teams.
We are businesspeople first, but we understand technology, coding, modeling and bring that together so we can guide functional strategy with analytics.
The Impact:
- Own the end-to-end scope of assigned initiatives within the BIRA program, ensuring clarity of objectives, alignment to business needs, and timely delivery of outcomes.
- Serve as the primary point of accountability for initiative execution—facilitating kick-off meetings, managing stakeholder engagement, and maintaining clear documentation throughout the lifecycle.
- Apply systems thinking to connect initiative goals with broader BIRA strategy, identifying interdependencies, risks, and opportunities for synergy across workstreams.
- Collaborate closely with cross-functional partners—including ETX and internal BIRA teams—to ensure seamless handoffs, shared understanding, and aligned execution.
- Leverage standardized tools and processes (e.g., Jira, requirements templates, status indicators) to drive transparency, consistency, and accountability across initiatives.
- Monitor and report on initiative health through regular status updates, proactively flagging blockers, risks, or misalignments to ensure sustained momentum and timely resolution.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of initiative management practices by sharing insights, identifying process gaps, and modeling best practices in execution.
- Bring a positive, solution-oriented mindset to challenges, with a strong belief in continuous learning, adaptability, and growth
The Minimum Qualifications:
- 6+ years of experience leading medium to large-scale initiatives, with demonstrated ownership of scope, stakeholder engagement, and execution in a cross-functional environment OR 6+ years of experience in initiative or program management, business consulting, and/or technical delivery.
The Ideal Qualifications:
- Demonstrated ability to think strategically and connect solutions to business outcomes.
- Strong communication and skills with the ability to synthesize complex information and present clearly to diverse audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to translate complex initiatives into structured, milestone-driven plans and visual timelines (e.g., Gantt charts, RACI, work breakdown structures, resource tracking spreadsheets, etc.), supported by clear, comprehensive documentation and project artifacts aligned with departmental standards.
- Demonstrated ability to seamlessly shift context across multiple initiatives, meetings, and priorities throughout the day—maintaining clarity, focus, and productivity in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
- Experience using project or work management tools (e.g., MS Project, Monday, Asana, Jira, Excel, etc.) to track progress, manage dependencies, and ensure accountability.
- Proven ability to influence and drive alignment across diverse stakeholder groups without formal authority, leveraging strong communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills to achieve project objectives and resolve conflicts.
- Comfortable operating in ambiguity and shifting priorities, with a strong ability to anticipate change, adjust plans, and maintain momentum.
- Skilled at building momentum and engagement across initiative teams by clarifying purpose, reinforcing ownership, and celebrating progress.
- Confident leading meetings and discussions that surface blockers, align stakeholders, and drive decisions—regardless of reporting structure.
- Brings a collaborative, growth-oriented approach to working with peers and partners, offering feedback that strengthens execution and team cohesion.
- Demonstrated experience working with data, reporting, or business intelligence teams, with a solid understanding of data concepts (e.g., KPIs vs. metrics, data lifecycle).
- Familiarity with Jira, Confluence, and Microsoft Copilot to support initiative tracking, documentation, and communication.
- Experience working in data-rich environments, with a practical understanding of how data informs business decisions and initiative outcomes.
What to Expect as Part of MassMutual and the Team:
- Regular meetings with the Business Intelligence, Reporting & Analytics (BIRA) team
- Focused one-on-one meetings with your manager
- Networking opportunities including access to Asian, Hispanic/Latinx, African American, women, LGBTQIA+, veteran and disability-focused Business Resource Groups
- Access to learning content on Degreed and other informational platforms
