Job Description
The Opportunity:
The Financial Management Consultant is an integral part of the Strategic Planning and Delivery (SP&D) organization. He/she provides the financial oversight of the strategic spend portfolio.
The Team:
The SP&D Office oversees the planning, governance, and execution of strategic projects that drive transformation and growth. It ensures strategic alignment, prioritization, and value realization across MassMutual’s portfolio, partnering closely with divisional leadership. SP&D is known for its disciplined approach to financial oversight, cross-functional collaboration, and transparent governance processes. The team includes roles such as Workstream Leads, Finance Leads, Insight Leads, and Program Managers, each accountable for driving execution, managing budgets, and enabling decision-making through data and reporting.
The Impact:
The Financial Management Consultant is an integral part of the Strategic Planning and Delivery (SP&D) organization. He/she serves as the primary finance lead for a specific workstream(s) within SP&D, ensuring the financials driven by the projects are realized in the company’s general ledger, and is responsible for approving SP&D projects from financial perspective through multiple stages, enforcing SP&D policies to maintain financial discipling of SP&D. She/he will also conduct analysis of the portfolio and providing insights on the portfolio to support planning, prioritization and performance.
With this important role comes key accountabilities and responsibilities which include but are not limited to:
Strategic Consulting:
- Coach initiative owners on financial principles, assumptions and methodologies
- Ongoing consultation throughout cost benefit analysis (CBA) development
- Review and approve projects, from financial perspective, through stage gates
- Apply business judgment to eliminate potential overlaps across projects
- Ongoing support throughout the project execution phase from a financial perspective
- Validate projects benefits through financial statements
Portfolio Analysis:
- Project spend and benefits for the portfolio
- Analsyis changes in spend and benefits including drivers
- Work closely with Corporate Finance on forecast and variance analysis
- Development of governance mechanisms (i.e. dashboard) to provide transparency and progression of the portfolio / projects
- What if and scenario analysis
- Harvesting learnings from the portfolio to apply to future projects
The Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s Degree
• 8+ years of work experience involving finance, actuarial, pricing, auditing or equivalent financial experiences
• Excellent analytical abilities
• Understanding of drivers of profitability within businesses
• Collaboration with stakeholders and providing independent objective perspectives
• Strong verbal and written communication (presentation) skills with the ability to synthesize and explain complex topics to senior leaders
The Ideal Qualifications
Advanced degree or designation preferred: CPA or FSA or MBA or equivalent degree or designation
