Job Description

The Opportunity

Investment Management (IM) is looking to hire a skilled and dynamic market data lead to join our Data Strategy and Governance team to help drive strategic decision marking and foster relationships with key enterprise users of market data. This individual will report to the Head of Investment Data Strategy and Governance and will primarily function as a leader for the Investment Management business in choosing the right market data for its requirements. They will be responsible for the strategy to outline the market data landscape partners, rationalizing market data usage with IM and MM as well as helping the business understand differences and value propositions of each Market data offering in the market. They will uphold the team’s governance framework working with cross-functional teams across MassMutual to identify, document, communicate, and memorialize challenges and opportunities, improve processes, build strong relationships, and look for opportunities to streamline provider relationships. They will support the execution of policies and procedures that support IM’s mission, vision, and strategy.

The Team

The Data Strategy team is part of IM’s Strategy and Governance Organization. The Strategy and Governance team drives IM’s strategy forward, optimizing governance and decision-making processes, analyzes, and establishes common metrics, processes, and tools and supports key internal and external stakeholders in progressing the IM target operating model. The team is also responsible for coordinating the department’s strategic initiatives, Investment Compliance, Investment Due Diligence, Reporting, Manager Oversight, and Vendor Oversight.

  • You will build and maintain influential relationships with key business stakeholders from Investment Operations, Quantitative Research and Development, Procurement and Analytics teams
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with the Market Data industry within the financial services and investment management space.
  • You will create and maintain relationships with the Senior Leadership Team within Investment Management to assist their teams in decisions related to Market Data availability and market participants
  • You will set the strategic direction for market data on behalf of the Investment Management business and where applicable for MassMutual
  • You will use your knowledge of investment management processes and be the primary decision maker for market data choices including new sources for new IM products, removal of data sources and adjustment of existing partnerships
  • You will be responsible for costs and budgeting for market data on behalf of IM managing costs at or below budget
  • You will report and review market data decisions and costs periodically with your manager, the Head of Investment Data Strategy and Governance.
  • Demonstrate strong partnership and communicate frequently with all stakeholders that use market data from these providers
  • Work closely with the Investment Vendor Oversight SEM COE to define SLAs and KPIs required to monitor provider health
  • Own resolution of tactical and critical issue resolution, and leverage the Vendor Oversight SEM COE
  • Define and report on data required to monitor market data health

Key Impact/Responsibilities

As part of this Data Strategy team, you will be responsible for forming and maintaining strong relationships with the market data industry. You will quickly come to understand connection points, core processes and procedures, key resources that support business functions, and navigate interdependencies. You will work collaboratively but persistently with our business partners to improve interactions with market data, understanding the challenges and opportunities they face in working with market data platforms and service providers. You will partner with subject matter experts to document, prioritize, and drive associated process and data improvement efforts to completion. You will be the primary contact between the market data providers and Investment Management business teams.

In this role you will have the unique opportunity to:

  • Match evolving data requirements of business partners to best fit in the marketplace.
  • Maintain relationships with the market data industry and bring the best providers to bear for Investment Management’s requirements.
  • Collaborate with procurement market data category manager to continuously assess capabilities of current and potential providers
  • Assume the responsibilities of the Supplier Engagement Manager (SEM) for all IM initiated and owned market data engagements
  • Monitor the health, cost, and fit for purpose of supplier relationships to inform procurement on decisions about contract and license renewals
  • Collaborate with the procurement team on the entire contracting process
  • In partnership with SRMs, maintain positive relationships with third party market data providers while advocating on behalf of MassMutual to quickly address and resolve customer issues
  • Assist SRMs in the preparation of regular due diligence and management review meetings with strategic partners
  • Contribute to the annual budget process and manage all market data expenses in relation to the budget for Investment management
  • Maintain an inventory of suppliers, licenses by departments and cost centers. Develop and produce reporting as needed for Investment management.

The Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 5+ years of experience managing investment market data
  • 10+ years of experience in investment management or investment services space
  • Understanding of domestic and International Market Data offerings, both real-time and historic
  • Experience with market data providers such as Bloomberg, Refinitiv, FactSet, MSCI, NYSE, Nasdaq, CME, and S&P
  • Working knowledge of SQL and demonstrated experience with Data Analysis using SQL and Spreadsheets
  • Ability to build strong partnerships with business partners, functional areas, peers, technology partners, and market data providers
  • Highly effective communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Employs a disciplined approach and detail orientation, with proven results in managing multiple deliverables
  • Possesses excellent analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills

The Ideal Qualifications

  • Certificate or education in master data management
  • Working knowledge of data analysis tools such as python/R
  • Knowledge of data movement paradigms such as SFTP, API, Snowflake Share, Databricks Share amongst others
  • Understanding of data formats such as JSON, Marked Up Languages
