Job Description
The Opportunity
As a Business Consultant within the Data Strategy, Business Intelligence, Reporting & Analytics (BIRA) team, you’ll be at the center of driving high-impact, cross-functional efforts that enable data-informed decision-making across MassMutual Operations. This role is ideal for someone who engages from a place of optimism, who thrives in dynamic environments, brings structure to ambiguity, and excels at aligning people, plans, and priorities to deliver measurable outcomes.
The Team
The Data Strategy, Business Intelligence, Reporting & Analytics team enables Operations and key business partners across MassMutual by providing actionable insights to inform both strategic initiatives and operational decisions. Using industry leading tools, we empower all levels of the organization via analytics, reporting, data management, visualization, business technology, and more. In short, we consult and partner with leaders on business intelligence needs, representing information in business-friendly terms with powerful visualizations. Our work enables advisor centricity, business performance, and aligns associate activity metrics with operations goals. On any given day, this could mean sourcing and structuring internal data, integrating third party data, deriving analytical insight, creating leading/lagging indicators, or guiding data literacy to engage users in data driven decisioning across their teams. We are businesspeople first, but we understand technology, coding, and modeling - bringing it together to guide functional strategy with analytics.
The Impact
From the lens of the BIRA team, you’ll lead product launch, decommission and migration initiatives from intake through execution and closeout— ensuring that data dependencies, lineage, and reporting needs are proactively managed throughout the lifecycle of decommission and migration initiatives. Working closely with Internal Business Partners (IBPs), data professionals, change readiness colleagues, project managers and operational leaders, you’ll act as a single point of contact to ensure data, dashboards, and analytics from legacy tools are well documented and have a clear path forward as new systems/products come available. This is a unique opportunity to apply your critical/strategic thinking, facilitation, problem solving, and organization skills, along with executional rigor in a role that blends business analysis, initiative leadership, and team enablement.
Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Own the end-to-end scope of assigned initiative from BIRA lens, including mapping data flows, identifying data dependencies, and ensuring data assets are transitioned or retired appropriately.
Serve as the primary point of accountability for initiative execution—facilitating kick-off meetings, managing stakeholder engagement, and maintaining clear documentation throughout the lifecycle.
Apply systems thinking to connect initiative goals with broader BIRA strategy, identifying interdependencies, risks, and opportunities for synergy across workstreams, while working closely with Operations PMO to align project priorities, timelines, and cross-functional impacts.
Collaborate closely with cross-functional partners, including technical team and internal BIRA teams—to ensure seamless handoffs, shared understanding, and aligned execution.
Leverage standardized tools and processes (e.g., Jira, requirements templates, status indicators) to drive transparency, consistency, and accountability across initiatives.
Monitor and report on initiative health through regular status updates, proactively flagging blockers, risks, or misalignments to ensure sustained momentum and timely resolution.
Contribute to the continuous improvement of initiative management practices by sharing insights, identifying process gaps, and modeling best practices in execution.
Bring a positive, solution-oriented mindset to challenges, with a strong belief in continuous learning, adaptability, and growth.
Serve as “air traffic control” for all system decommissions and migrations impacting BIRA—proactively assessing and managing data impacts and interdependencies across multiple projects, coordinating with diverse stakeholders inside and outside the organization to ensure data stewardship, reporting continuity, and business intelligence needs are protected.
The Minimum Qualifications
4+ years of experience leading medium to large-scale data initiatives, with demonstrated ownership of scope, stakeholder engagement, and execution in a cross-functional environment OR
4+ years of experience in initiative or program management, business consulting, technical delivery, or a related field.
High School Diploma
The Ideal Qualifications
Demonstrated ability to think strategically and connect solutions to business outcomes.
Strong communication skills with the ability to synthesize complex information and present clearly to diverse audiences.
Demonstrated ability to translate complex initiatives into structured, milestone-driven plans and visual timelines supported by clear, comprehensive documentation and project artifacts aligned with departmental standards.
Demonstrated ability to seamlessly shift context across multiple initiatives, meetings, and priorities throughout the day, maintaining clarity, focus, and productivity in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
Experience using project or work management tools (e.g., MS Project, Monday, Asana, Jira, Excel, etc.) to track progress, manage dependencies, and ensure accountability.
Demonstrated experience working with data, reporting, or business intelligence teams, with a solid understanding of data concepts (e.g., KPIs vs. metrics, data lifecycle)
