Job Description
The Opportunity
The Product & Distribution Expense Strategy team within Corporate Actuarial is looking for an energetic actuary with strong analytical skills to join the team as an Expense Actuary. Reporting to the Head of Product & Distribution Expense Strategy, you will support the Product & Distribution Expense team and have the opportunity to use your business analytic skills to provide a detailed understanding of how our business works, make recommendations to improve our performance, become the expense expert within several product lines/functions, and perform analysis that reaches the highest levels of the organization. The team’s efforts have significant impact across all lines of business, including Life Insurance, Annuity, Disability Income, Worksite Insurance, and Institutional products as well as functions such as Pricing, Corporate Actuarial, Finance, Underwriting, Operations, and ETX.
The Team
The Product & Distribution Expense Strategy team is a high performing group of actuaries and financial professionals dedicated to shaping the company’s expense landscape through actuarial expertise, advanced analytics, and strategic insight. Distinct from Strategic Expense Management and FP&A, this team is uniquely positioned at the intersection of actuarial science and business strategy, directly informing product pricing, distribution economics, and enterprise financial outcomes.
The team thrives in a fast-paced environment where bespoke analysis and ad hoc requests are common. Their work is characterized by intellectual rigor, objectivity, and a collaborative spirit, making them respected thought partners for expense-related insights across actuarial, financial, and business domains. The team thrives on solving complex, cross-functional challenges and is committed to continuous improvement, knowledge sharing, and building organizational capacity for the future.
The Impact:
The team is actively looking for an Actuary who can work independently, quickly understand and assess a situation, and collaborate within and across teams to effect positive change. You will use interpersonal skills to engage teams in problem solving key issues and use your analytical skills to develop value-added insights. The results of these expense analyses will support recommendations and communications to various senior business leaders.
Key Responsibilities include:
- Provide subject matter expertise to internal stakeholders, including pricing teams, finance teams, etc., for specific lines of business/functions
- Work assigned line of businesses/functions to analyze expense strategies for that line of business and associated impacts on the enterprise
- Perform Pricing versus Actual/Forecasted expense analysis
- Support development of new expense models and processes, identify and implement continuous improvement opportunities, and regularly adapt current technology applications, procedures, techniques and tools to meet business needs
- Partner with Product to provide expense analysis, financial drivers, and a marketplace perspective on product ideation to support MassMutual’s competitive positioning
- Embrace a growth mindset and collaborating with other teams on improving understanding and education on the reasons behind the expenses and other enterprise trends
- Support substantive strategic problem-solving efforts – thought leadership (e.g., defining key questions and problem-solving hypothesis), stakeholder engagement (e.g., leading stakeholder interactions and providing constructive challenge), and team leadership (e.g., leading the research/analysis with cross functional teams)
- Generate impact as a trusted advisor by maintaining the ability to see the big picture in inherently complex and dynamic situations and demonstrating a strong sense for value in both prioritizing and solving problems.

The Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics, Actuarial Science, Finance or Computer/Data Science or related field
- 5+ years of actuarial experience working in insurance, risk or financial services
- Associate of the Society of Actuaries
The Ideal Qualifications
- New or Near Fellow of the Society of Actuaries
- Member, American Academy of Actuaries a plus
- Experience with insurance products, insurance accounting and finance, and product profitability
- Experience processing, manipulating, validating, and analyzing large amounts of data by utilizing the latest technology (i.e. Excel, SQL, Alteryx, etc.) and leveraging generative AI tools to enhance workflows, analysis and efficiency
- Ability to quickly break down problems in a structured manner and prioritize analysis
- Ability to analyze complex data and draw out insights and implications
- Ability to create simple, powerful, and data-driven communications
- Strategic thinker who can work independently and distill findings into key conclusions and recommendations
- Self-motivated and driven self-starter
- Ability to work collaboratively and partner with others, and effectively communicate complex analysis and related insights to technical and nontechnical audiences
- Authorized to work in the US with or without sponsorship now or in the future
