Head of Life & Health Financial Projection Models
Modeling COE, CFO Organization
Full-Time, Springfield, MA or Boston, MA
The Opportunity
MassMutual is seeking a visionary leader to serve as the Head of Life and Health Financial Projection models within our Modeling Center of Excellence (COE). This role offers a unique opportunity to shape the future of actuarial and financial modeling for life and health products, driving innovation and excellence across the organization. As the steward of our financial projection models, you will lead a high-performing team responsible for designing, developing, and governing models that support critical business functions such as forecasting, capital planning, asset-liability management (ALM), and stress testing. Your leadership will ensure these models are accurate, efficient, scalable and compliant with regulatory standards, while fostering collaboration with key stakeholders in Finance, Valuation, ALM, ERM, Investment Management and Technology. This is a strategic and influential position for a results-driven leader who combines deep technical expertise with strong business acumen, exceptional communication skills and a passion for developing talent. This role will report to the Head of Modeling Center of Excellence.
The Team
The Modeling Center of Excellence is a newly established team within MassMutual’s CFO organization. Its primary mission is to elevate our modeling capabilities and enhance the speed, quality, and fidelity of integrated financial projection models that support FP&A, ALM, capital planning, and other downstream processes.
The Impact
- Strategic Leadership: Contribute to setting the vision, priorities, and roadmap for the Modeling COE, ensuring alignment with enterprise objectives. Drive innovation in modeling techniques, tools, and processes to improve accuracy and efficiency.
- Collaboration & Influence: Build trusted relationships with cross-functional teams, influencing decision-making and driving consensus on complex modeling initiatives. Collaborate with leaders within the Finance organization to ensure alignment of modeling outputs with business objectives. Communicate complex modeling results to non-technical stakeholders in a clear and actionable manner. Partner with FP&A, Valuation, Capital Planning, Treasury, ALM, ERM, Investment Management and Product teams to deliver insights from projection models.
- Model Development & Governance: Oversee the design, development, and maintenance of life and health actuarial projection models used for FP&A, ALM and capital planning. Ensure financial projection models comply with regulatory requirements (e.g., US Statutory, LDTI GAAP and economic bases) and internal control standards. Lead model governance, including facilitating signoffs with ERM and audit while ensuring robust model governance, documentation, and validation frameworks.
- Model implementation and execution: Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support the assumption update processes. Execute, validate and refine projection model outputs while monitoring model infrastructure and performance.
- Talent Development: Actively manage team performance, provide coaching and mentorship, and create opportunities for professional growth to build a high-performing and engaged team. Manage resource allocation and prioritize projects to meet deadlines and strategic goals.
- Innovation & Continuous Improvement: Champion new ideas, tools, and methodologies to enhance modeling capabilities and maintain a competitive edge in industry. Explore emerging technologies (e.g., machine learning, predictive analytics) to enhance modeling capabilities.
The Minimum Qualifications
- FSA or equivalent actuarial designation
- Bachelors degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or related fields; advanced degree is ideal
- 10+ years of hands-on experience working with actuarial models, including more than 5+ years leading and managing high‑performing teams. This includes leading model development and production, setting technical direction, mentoring junior talents, and ensuring delivery of high‑quality analytical outputs that support key business decisions.
- Expertise in financial projection models, financial analysis, valuation frameworks, and regulatory standards. Experience includes developing, validating, and interpreting complex projection models; applying advanced valuation methodologies across multiple product lines; conducting robust financial and scenario analyses; and ensuring compliance with evolving regulatory requirements such as statutory, GAAP, and principles‑based frameworks.
The Ideal Qualifications and Key Competencies
- Deep technical proficiency in actuarial projection modeling and end-to-end processing
- Experience with Axis is highly preferred. Familiarity with Prophet, MGALFA, or other actuarial software is considered an asset
- Experience with programming languages such as Python, R, VBA, Java, or C# is considered an asset
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
