Competitive Insights Consultant
Strategic Intelligence within Corporate Strategy and the Corporate Finance Organization (CFO)
Full-Time
Boston, MA
The Opportunity
As a Competitive Insights Consultant, you will shape the evolution of the function to meet Corporate Strategy’s mandate for next-level insights on emerging industry trends. You will have a key role defining the capabilities, the deliverables, and the influence of the function. Work products from Strategic Insights are widely distributed within MassMutual. The team also regularly interacts with senior leaders, including a quarterly competitive update with our Executive Leadership Team (ELT) to highlight key competitor and market actions and suggest countermeasures needed by MassMutual. You will work in tandem with peers leading Consumer Insights and Market Insights functions, all of whom report to the Head of Strategic Intelligence. Your responsibilities include:
- Identify, advise, and maintain appropriate data sources for Competitive Insights use-cases
- Establish infrastructure for robust, flexible (e.g., scenarios), and repeatable competitive-market insights
- Manage relationships with vendor-partners and / or internal teams who own key dependencies
- Build and expand the profile of the function by publishing and presenting insights in a regular cadence to MassMutual manager audience (SM and above) in addition to bespoke analyses to influence the Senior Leadership and Executive Leadership Teams
- Work with distribution leaders across the company to identify key competitor trends and build and present analyses for the businesses and the ELT
- Independently and in collaboration with Corporate Strategy colleagues propose and lead projects to identify key competitive trends and drive business value
- Sustain strong working relationships with partner teams across MassMutual for impact
- Anticipate having a rotational iMMerse analyst typically reporting to them and manage this analyst and provide development and mentorship
The Team
Strategic Intelligence operates within Corporate Strategy and the Corporate Finance Organization (CFO).
CFO is embarking on a transformative vision: To be known as trusted business partners to the company and stewards of long-term value creation for our policyowners by driving influence and impact through high-quality, timely insights.
Corporate Strategy contributes to this vision by identifying and analyzing emerging industry trends and competitive risks, recommending growth opportunities and ensuring business and corporate unit strategies align with the organizational vision and long-term aspirations. Corporate Strategy will also evolve its capabilities and develop a multi-year strategic planning framework, incorporating scenario-based planning.
Strategic Intelligence supports Corporate Strategy and CFO by applying specialized and proprietary data for insights and impact. The team is reimaging its Insights functions – which are tasked with spotlighting crucial strategic trends in the insurance and financial services sector. We seek a highly effective leader to focus on competitors’ actions and refine insights based on their actions.
The Impact
- Create and shape a key function within the MassMutual Corporate Strategy group
- Elevate the role of Competitive Insights toward Corporate Strategy and CFO objectives
- Increase awareness and depth of thinking on competitive insights topics across MassMutual
- Influence leaders to evolve perspectives and to adopt specific recommendations when appropriate
- Contribute toward the professional growth of team members – especially for iMMerse rotational analysts
The Minimum Qualifications
- 4+ years of experience in insurance and financial services industry research, equity research, and / or market research
- Bachelor’s degree
- Superior analytical skills and sound business judgement – especially toward topics within the insurance and financial services industry
- Effective and persuasive communication skills across written and verbal formats
- Dependable workstream management exhibiting a consistent “ownership mentality”
- Orientation toward teamwork and interest in leading projects and teammates
- Developmental focus and responsiveness to feedback to advance professional growth
The Ideal Qualifications
- 6+ years of experience in insurance industry research, equity research, and / or market research
- Graduate degree or professional designation relevant to role
- Proficiency with industry-specific data sources (e.g., LIMRA, AM Best, S&P) and standard reporting practices
- Familiarity with data administration (e.g., relational databases, SQL) and visualization / BI (e.g., MicroStrategy, Tableau) tools
- Proven ability to work independently and drive to conclusion highly visible projects for senior leaders
- Experience in team / people management
