Director – Visualization & Analytics

Boston, MA; Springfield, MA - Full-Time (Hybrid)

The Opportunity

The Business Intelligence, Reporting & Analytics team enables Operations and key business partners across MassMutual by providing actionable insight to inform both strategic initiatives and operational decisions. Through industry leading tools, we empower all levels of the organization via analytics, reporting, data management, visualization and business technology, to name a few areas.  In short, we consult with leaders on business intelligence needs and represent it in ‘business speak’ with powerful visualizations to enable advisor centricity, business performance and align associate activity metrics.  On any given day, this could mean sourcing and structuring internal data, integrating third party data, deriving analytical insight, creating leading/lagging indicators or guiding data literacy to engage users in data driven decisioning across their teams.  We are businesspeople first, but we understand technology, coding, modeling and bring that together so we can guide functional strategy with analytics.

The Team

Operations is at a critical growth point where we have integrated multiple business intelligence teams, technologies, processes and programs. You will have an opportunity to lead and drive strategic activities and planning associated with Operations Business Intelligence objectives.  This role is a unique balance of business acumen, technical skills and the ability to navigate the broader MassMutual organization as we shift to an advisor centric organization. You will demonstrate accountability, agility, a dedication to be inclusive, and will show courage, even in the most difficult situations. The Impact

  • As the Director of Visualization, Self Service and Automation you will be a critical member of the Business Intelligence, Reporting and Analytics leadership team, tasked with driving the strategic vision and execution of visualization, self-service and automation tools within the business. 

  • This is a newly created role that will work closely with other Business Intelligence, Reporting and Analytics leaders and matrixed partners to promote a cohesive vision. As a player/coach, you will lead a team of ~7 people (US and India) responsible for user-friendly tools that provide insights and enable a data-driven culture.

  • Participate as a member of the Business Intelligence leadership team to achieve department specific goals and drive organizational performance.

  • Partner with the Director Program Management & Alignment to build the team landing page that will elevate our brand, house our dashboards/tools and become the center of our future self-service strategy.  This includes defining internal clients’ personas and their respective journeys to valuable, insightful information.

  • Using your in-depth background in like tools, you will collaborate with Relationship Managers as they articulate the needs of their business partners to design the best solutions. You will partner with Relationship Managers to drive improvement using said tools inclusive of creating engaging, modern training materials.

  • Evaluate currently available tools and provide strategic recommendations; inclusive of writing business cases for decommissioning or acquiring new tools. Partner with leaders inside of team and broadly across PMO, ETX (IT) and other partners to achieve goals.

  • You will lead an effort focused on consistency – consistency of dashboard/tool design, policies and procedures.

  • Create processes with other leaders for dashboard/tool requirements intake, delivery and maintenance.

  • Keep the team current on industry best practices, ideas, and technologies within visualization, self-service and automation tools.As a systems thinker, you enjoy educating colleagues on data literacy and why a single source of truth is important for collective success.  You are an eloquent speaker with the ability to make the complex simple.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • 8+ year experience with Business Intelligence & Analytics tools such as Tableau, Alteryx, MicroStrategy, and Power BI.

  • 5+ years of experience in financial services

  • 5+ years of leadership experience in both a direct and matrixed environment, working with technology partners representing the needs of the business

  • 8+ years of experience with and proven experience modernizing and integrating visualization, self-service or automation tools.

Ideal Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree, Masters in Business Administration or Business Analytics

  • Experience leading business intelligence modernization initiatives including data literacy elevation.

  • Knowledge of Agile/Scrum project management methodologies.

  • Proven ability to lead others through considerable business change.

  • Proficiency in SQL, R, Python or other advanced programming languages with desire to learn new tools as they become available in MassMutual. 

  • Strong EQ with calm demeanor.
