Job Description
The Opportunity
Investment Management (IM) is looking to hire an experienced team member to lead and execute IM’s financial communications. This individual will report to the Head of Investment Reporting and Communications and will be responsible for analyzing data to develop and execute communications on investment management’s financial output and performance. This leader will serve as an important contact for certain investment messaging and related analytics, ensuring insightful, compelling, unified storytelling, that is timely and transparent and for developing an effective financial dialogue between the business, executive leadership and internal / external stakeholders. In this role you will partner with leaders from around investment management and other organizations across MassMutual to take our financial metrics, outputs and analytics and create/develop a cohesive story.
The Team
The Investment Management Reporting and Communications team is part of the IM (IM) Strategy and Governance Organization. The Strategy and Governance team drives IM’s strategy forward, optimizing governance and decision-making processes, analyzes, and establishes common metrics, processes, and tools and supports key internal and external stakeholders in progressing the IM target operating model. The team is also responsible for coordinating the departments strategic initiatives, budget, communications, vendor oversight, manager oversight, board and rating agency reporting, Investment Compliance, Investment Due-Diligence and Investment Data Strategy and Governance.
Impact/Key Responsibilities
Oversee development of the financial narrative and related presentation materials in the context of investment operations, investment performance and other investment metrics, as well as business and department strategy
- Develop key messages from investment management business, onto paper, telling a cohesive story which is consistent with enterprise financial messaging
- Combine, filter and disseminate analysis and metrics created by the investment operations and other investment teams into clear and concise presentations
- Develop robust and well governed end-to-end reporting processes, from information sourcing to presentation which articulates themes concisely for an executive audience and the board; develop a deep understanding of the numbers and related drivers
- Drive standard and detailed support packages for presentation materials, including talking points and attribution analysis which are consistent with messaging across the firm
- Provide counsel and develop comprehensive and consistent financial messaging to feed Investor Relations, Enterprise Communications, and Media Relations outputs. This should be aligned with messaging to other audiences and specific to the development communicated
- Align official message of KPI’s with the outcomes and actions of investment management
- Link investment output to enterprise strategy and Senior executives based on an understanding of both the business and financial conditions
- Manage a broad range of both proactive and reactive communication projects across our investment management function
- Establish mechanisms to analyze investment results, in partnership with departments across Investments. This includes attending regular huddles to gather information and determine trends and insight.
- Empowered to use considerable judgment and analysis to arrive at conclusions or recommendations
- Serve as expert in communications, financial analysis content development, coaching others to enhance their development
- Direct effective communications with key external audiences in support of MassMutual’s financial performance
The Minimum Qualifications
- BS in accounting, finance or actuarial science; MBA or CFA preferred
- 10+ years of relevant experience
- 7+ years of experience in financial analysis or investment management
- Experience preparing board materials
- Ability to perform independent research and prepare presentation materials
- Expert written communications and presentation skills
- Knowledge of financial presentation and data tools
- Ability to proactively take ownership of projects and drive them through to completion
- Strong multi-tasking skills and ability to adapt to change; strong desire to “roll-up sleeves”
The Ideal Qualifications
- Prior experience in rating agency and/or investor relations communications
- Prior management consulting, investment operations or rating agency analysis experience
- Deep life insurance industry knowledge
- Executive presence; proven experience coordinating and participating in management meetings
