Job Description
The Opportunity
As a member of the MassMutual Legal Department, this attorney will be an integral part of MassMutual’s small but growing Data, Digital & Marketing Law team, which is responsible for supporting the legal needs of MassMutual’s Enterprise Technology Experience group’s data science, data and AI governance, and digital and technology teams, as well as MassMutual’s Brand and Marketing group. This individual contributor role is an excellent opportunity to work with a sophisticated team on cutting-edge data science and AI initiatives, innovative website and mobile app programs, marketing analytics, and prominent marketing and advertising campaigns.
The Team
MassMutual’s Data, Digital & Marketing Law team provides supports a wide and growing range of initiatives, including some of the Company’s most complex and innovative programs. A lawyer on this team will work on numerous matters concurrently, covering projects such as prominent marketing campaigns, new generative-AI initiatives, privacy matters relating to websites, mobile apps, targeted marketing, and other digital initiatives, accelerated underwriting technologies, complex contract negotiations, and marketing analytics. The team supports projects that impact various groups across the MassMutual enterprise, and therefore frequently collaborates with other lawyers and subject matter experts in the Legal Department, including the Product Law, Corporate Law, Privacy Law, and Tax Law groups. Lawyers on the Data, Digital & Marketing team must be agile and accountable team players who are effective communicators.
The Impact:
• Provide strategic, regulatory and transactional legal advice and counsel to the data science, data and AI governance, digital, technology, and marketing groups.
• Assist data science and data and AI governance teams by analyzing legal risks associated with machine learning and predictive models and business solutions powered by AI, including generative AI.
• Advise the data and AI governance teams and internal business clients on compliance with new and anticipated legislation aimed at promoting fairness, accountability, and transparency in the use of internally-developed and vendor-supplied AI and data science techniques.
• Support marketing team by assisting in negotiating agency and advertising vendor agreements, assisting in sports sponsorship negotiations, supporting the marketing analytics team, advising on legal matters relating to lead generation and delivery, social media campaigns, and targeted marketing, and providing legal review of advertising content.
• Collaborate with Privacy Law team and advise digital and marketing clients on emerging privacy regulations related to targeted and behavioral marketing.
• Support the development of digital and online self-service tools for customers and financial professionals, and advise on applicable digital, e-commerce, insurance and web accessibility laws.
• Represent MassMutual in trade association groups related to digital innovations and use of AI, accelerated underwriting, risk classification, and digital privacy; collaborate with government relations team to monitor regulatory developments and support a proactive regulator outreach strategy.
The Minimum Qualifications
• JD from an accredited U.S. law school, a member of the Bar in good standing (any state), and the ability to become licensed for in-house practice in Massachusetts if not currently licensed in Massachusetts.
• 5+ years in a top law firm and/or corporate environment.
• Effective management presence and excellent interpersonal, communication and writing skills.
• Ability to identify issues, exercise sound judgment, and provide practical legal advice in a fast-paced environment, while navigating a complex insurance regulatory landscape.
• Strong client relationship skills and the ability to consult with all levels of management.
• Intellectual curiosity, collegiality, initiative, independence, and a desire to learn new and evolving areas of law and technology.
• Authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship now or in the future.
The Ideal Qualifications
In depth understanding and experience acquired from working on initiatives and transactions, in financial services or insurance, relating to data and AI governance, digital and online solutions, privacy, and marketing.
