Job Description
The Opportunity
The Head of Field Risk Management, also known as the Field Risk Officer (FRO), is responsible for overseeing the supervisory system of the MMFA General Agency channel. In this role, the FRO is responsible for managing and mitigating sales practices and regulatory risk and providing support for three Regional Vice-Presidents, over 90 General Agents (GAs) and over 100 Agency Supervisory Officers (ASOs). The FRO is responsible for communicating expectations as well as providing advice, guidance and coaching on a wide range of firm level and advisor topics. Develops and implements risk mitigation strategies within our career agency system to maintain all regulatory and supervisory requirements. The FRO is expected to put the Company’s interests first but must also be collaborative, responsive and find appropriate solutions to complex issues to support the business. The FRO reports directly to the Head of MMFA but is expected to align to the company’s risk and compliance framework as this role is the 1st line of defense in our 3 lines of defense risk management model. Collaboration within a matrixed environment with various partners in the broker-dealer, compliance, legal and audit departments, among others is critical.
The Team
The Field Risk Management team is comprised of five Regional Supervisory Directors, the Head of Sales Risk Strategy, the Head of Strategic Regulatory Initiatives, and the Head of the Supervisory Controls Group which oversees trade surveillance and broker dealer controls. The team is experienced, collaborative and works both individually and together to further the team’s and company’s objectives.
The Impact:
Provide direct support to the Regional Vice Presidents and General Agents in their respective role as Series 24 Registered Principal supervisors over the General Agents and Advisors.
Monitor, consult and guide GAs and ASOs on regulatory and supervisory requirements.
Manage, recommend, and implement timely and appropriate corrective action on various field risk and sales practices issues.
Follow the three E’s guiding principle. Everything the group does must be Effective, Efficient and with an eye on Ease of Doing Business.
Lead, Manage and Develop the Field Risk Management team including developing potential future leaders within the MassMutual competency framework.
Influence and participate in helping to shape regulatory and legislative policy via industry committees such as FINSECA, SIFMA, FINRA, etc.
Serves as company witness/expert in depositions/trials as needed on behalf of MassMutual.
Responsible for the review and handling of all field investigations through our third-party compliance and ethics reporting mechanism.
The Minimum Qualifications
10+ years of general agency or related experience
FINRA Series 7 and 24
Must have the ability to travel <25%
The Ideal Qualifications
Strong understanding of broker-dealer, investment advisory and insurance regulatory requirements and has supported or worked directly within a general agency or related system.
This role commands a high degree of executive presence skills and demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and influence both internal and external key stakeholders
Proven experience and ability to lead others, and hold yourself and team members accountable.
FINRA Series 53 and 65 (or 66) preferred but not required.
A JD degree is preferred but not required.
