Investment Professional

Alternative Cross-Asset Strategies (“ACAS”) Group

Full-time

Hybrid (Boston, MA or New York, NY)

The Opportunity

Join a fundamental value-oriented investment team focused on generating attractive risk-adjusted investment performance over a long-term time horizon across a wide spectrum of asset types. The strategy is a flexible and opportunistic mandate to invest across the traditional corporate capital structure as well as other less traditional asset classes and strategies, in either private or public form. This position will provide a unique opportunity to execute investments in different markets and stages from start to finish. The successful candidate will be open-minded and enjoy solving challenges, no matter the issue, while possessing a collaborative and team-first mentality. Various potential investments may include leveraged loans, high yield bonds, convertible or hybrid securities, distressed or event-driven situations, private or public equity, joint-ventures/seed investments, asset-backed credit/structured products, and selective private partnerships. Functionally this role is a cross-asset or hybrid investment position that will allow for shifting across different investment strategies and asset classes in search of asymmetric risk/reward.

The Team

This position is within a newly-formed focus area inside of the Alternatives team that is small and collaborative with various members across different verticals, and experience levels, including credit, real estate, private equity, and other investments. Team members wear multiple different hats and are motivated by a shared goal to source, research, analyze, and execute on unique investment opportunities, that generally target equity-oriented returns with a distinct focus on risk and downside protection, typically with creditor lens. This position will support broader Investment Management and our entire organization.

The Impact

This Position will be a critical team member capable of material contributions supporting all aspects of the investment process and leading in certain cases where appropriate. Specific work streams will focus on and include but are not limited to financial modeling; research and analysis; producing investment memos; legal review/due diligence, and general critical thinking/problem-solving. Given the flexibility of this role, the different investments/security types, and asset classes, this individual should be comfortable, or seek to gain comfort, in shifting perspectives as needed, based on the underlying investment and situational context.

Day-to-day responsibilities for this role may include, but are not limited to:

  • Analyzing public or private investment opportunities including any relevant surrounding information
  • Reviewing financial and legal documents as well as other forms of due diligence or market intelligence
  • Developing, updating, and maintaining financial models or other analytical tools
  • Preparing and presenting investment recommendations
  • Presenting and communicating analysis, research, and conclusions while soliciting feedback; audience may include colleagues within Investment Management as well as other key stakeholders (Investment Committee/Senior Leadership, legal, operations, etc.) Audience may also include external parties
  • Driving a process from start to finish with various levels of independence when appropriate

The Minimum Qualifications

  • BS/BA degree
  • 2+ years of relevant experience
  • 2+ years of bottoms-up financial modeling and analytical skills

The Ideal Qualifications

  • Deep industry/sector knowledge in one core, or multiple, different sub-sectors, industries, and/or markets along with a desire to explore other different areas of opportunity
  • Experience in, or exposure to, public and private investments and a working knowledge of different alternative asset classes and capital structures
  • Professional experience in complex situations, difficult negotiations, and/or businesses undergoing material change
  • Background in, or experience with, an event-driven or fundamental value-oriented multi-strategy alternative investment approach, distress/corporate restructurings, turnaround consulting, private equity, or a related advisory role
  • Ability to work with all seniority levels as well as a desire to maintain and grow strong relationships with various stakeholders, both internally and externally

While the majority of our employees follow this hybrid model, some of our roles continue to be 100% on-site and others may be 100% remote, subject to business needs.

MassMutual is guided by a single purpose: We help people secure their future and protect the ones they love. As a company operated for the benefit of our members, policyowners and customers, we are defined by mutuality and our vision to put customers first.
