Planning and Strategy Consultant, Capital & Investment Risk, ERM

Boston, Massachusetts Project Management Job ID R15508

The Opportunity

This is an opportunity for an exceptional, highly motivated, collaborative and experienced individual to join MassMutual’s Capital and Investment Risk Management team (within the Enterprise Risk Management division) to enhance the impact and efficiency of the team as it influences the management of risks associated with MassMutual’s investment decisions and use of capital.

You will work closely with the Head of Capital & Investment Risk and the team leadership to support the translation of vision into action, reinforce accountability, and drive operational efficiency. Collaborating with these leaders, you will facilitate the functional effectiveness of the team, coordinate and prioritize work, deploy resources, and evolve processes as appropriate.

The Team

The Capital & Investment Risk team works closely with the Investment Management and Finance divisions to deliver insights and influence decisions regarding MassMutual’s investment risk-taking and use of capital, helping to protect MassMutual’s financial strength and enable it to achieve its strategy.

The team comprises three core groups, with responsibilities for Capital Risk, Market & Liquidity Risk, and Credit Risk, and brings together diverse experts across capital markets, risk management, actuarial, and quantitative disciplines who work together to deliver analysis and recommendations. Their recommendations are consistent with the enterprise risk appetite framework, for which the team is also responsible. The team drives improvements in tools, technology and processes, for more consistent and scalable risk analysis and reporting, enabling greater opportunities for efficiency within ERM and with stakeholders in Investment Management and Finance.

The Impact

You will support the Head of Capital & Investment Risk to ensure the smooth running and evolution of the team’s processes, so that the variety of analytical and risk management work within the Capital & Investment Risk Management team is appropriately connected and scaled for maximum impact and efficiency.

The nature of the team’s work continues to evolve and increasingly requires input and coordination across the risk functions, and in this role, you will be vital to ensure the team continues to deliver high quality, impactful insights in an efficient and coordinated manner. You will also drive efficiency and alignment of the ongoing development and enhancement to the variety of tools and technology utilized across the team.

A key to success in this position is the ability to work collaboratively with other leaders within Capital & Investment Risk Management and stakeholders elsewhere within ERM, as well as the Investment Management, Finance and Technology functions. You will have experience leading and coordinating teams, easing communications, and uniting people across organizations to keep them moving forward.

Notable responsibilities include:

  • Contribute and help support elements of the team’s strategic planning design and process.
  • Ensure team meetings, strategy sessions, and related interactions and operational processes are well planned, and managed for high impact.

  • Manage, plan and coordinate team deliverables for executive leadership and Board meetings.
  • Coordinate the build, progression, and monitoring of team project plans in alignment with goals, in particular regarding the application and development of analytics, tools and processes across the team’s functions, liaising with external stakeholders where needed.
  • Monitor and flag issues and interdependencies and suggest opportunities for resolution/path forward proactively, promptly and tactfully, particularly as it relates to resource utilization and consistency of plans, so that potential resource constraints are identified early and addressed appropriately.
  • Coordinate the team's input into broader ERM deliverables and analysis, engaging with ERM’s Risk Strategy team (e.g., analysis and material for rating agency and regulatory meetings, supporting the team leader in maintaining and coordinating the team’s budget).
  • Strengthen team brand, including the development and application of consistent standards applied across team for maximum impact, applying strong data visualization and presentation skills.
  • Be the team’s primary point of contact with the ERM Risk Strategy team and the Chief Risk Officer’s Executive Liaison.

To do this, it is expected that you will:

  • Quickly self-educate on new topics with less familiarity.
  • Have interest in a wide range of business issues.
